The Bighorn Fire near Tucson in 2020 devoured tens of thousands of acres in the Catalina Mountains just north of town. On the outskirts of the fire, these hot spots high in the peaks created a latticework of spiraling smoke plumes from multiple small blazes tucked into the mountain's rocky crevices. The rugged terrain made it impossible for fire crews to work the fire from the ground. Instead they successfully concentrated on controlling the boundary and direction of the fire, steering the inferno around and away from structures and development, using firebreaks and aerial support. There are two versions of this image. This is the photographic image. Hot Spots AE was given an impressionistic treatment for a more painterly effect.
